For students who may not know what One World means on the explanation of the rubric on their Book Study Project directions, here it is, from Ms. Shawn LaTorre, our IB coordinator here at MMS:
One World states: "An understanding of the interactions in today's world between scientific and societal issues. This criterion allows students to appreciate the contributions and limitations of science. Students should be able to discuss the ways in which science is applied, including environmental, health, ethical, and moral considerations."
Then to score the maximum, the rubric for this criterion states:
The student demonstrates a clear understanding of the contributions and limitations of science across a range of societal issues. (S)he can make reasoned suggestions about how to integrate science into society, shows good insight into the cultural influences on the practice of science, and has a good understanding of the moral and ethical considerations that can be associated with scientific developments.
It is all about making real world connections to one's understanding and study of science.
