I thought the letter below that I received from Ms. Torres (our Algebra teacher) accurately portrays the differences in Pre-AP/Advanced and Algebra for next year. There seems to be a misconception that since Algebra is double blocked the kids will be instructed in both equally. This is not true. As you can read below, while the Algebra class will be inserting 8th grade math concepts, they spend a CONSIDERABLE amount less on these concepts. I hope this provides you more guidance on your math course choice.
Kimiko, I wanted to share with you the information that I passed on to Ms. Olles's 7th grade accelerated students about Algebra I being double blocked. It is NOT going to be 1/2 Algebra and 1/2 Math 8. While math 8 will be taught and practiced, the majority of the time will be focused on the Algebra content and preparing for the end of course exam. The example that I gave to them as to how math 8 will be covered was as follows: Last six weeks both the Pre-AP and Accelerated math 8 classes spent the entire six weeks on the Pythagorean theorem. These two classes approached it in different ways but all students had that extended time to absorb and practice the material. My Algebra students returned from winter break and spent a 90 minute class and a 45 minute class on the same material. The got the basic information but did not have the same amount of process and practice time. With double blocking I imagine that the same lesson will only be stretched out by another 90 minute class. The same is true of many other topics. I am finding that we are doing things in 45 minute classes in Algebra that I spent days on in Accelerated. One student put it best when she said "this is algebra with a math 8 thrown in, NOT math 8 with Algebra thrown in". Students will not miss math 8 instruction, but they will have significantly less time on those lessons than a normal 8th grade math class (preap or advanced).
Cristina Torres
Sincerely,
Kimiko Cartwright Principal, Murchison Middle School
