NEWS ARTICLES SHOULD...
- start with a lead that has as many of the W's (who, what, when, where, why) as possible
- continue with paragraphs that tell the details about each of the W's (a 'who' paragraph, a 'what' paragraph, etc.)
- include some quotations from people involved -- be sure to attribute the words or facts to the person who said them by using quotation marks " "
- be as well researched as possible!
- not have a conclusion! when you run out of facts, just stop
- be written in 3rd person about the topic, using he/him, she/her, they/them (avoid second person "you/your/you're")
- NOT have opinions of the writer
EDITORIAL/OPINION ARTICLES SHOULD....
- be written like an essay with an introduction/body/conclusion
- state your opinion in the introduction
- be written in first person (I / me / my) to express your opinion
- have reasons/facts/quotations to back up your opinion in the body paragraphs
- urge the readers (in the conclusion) to do something if they agree
MOVIE / BOOK / GAME REVIEWS SHOULD...
- begin with a brief summary of the book/movie/game: don't give too much away, but perhaps include the characters' names, the genre of the b/m/g, and the setting.
- critique the b/m/g: what technology or literary techniques are used? what kind of description or scenes help the b/m/g? what could be better?
- praise the b/m/g: what elements are great and make you want to read/see/play more?
- end with a recommendation: should the readers of the newspaper read/see/play this book/movie/game? Tell them where to access it!
- these articles may be written in first person (I / me / my)
